Toby Winarto is a Los Angeles born violist currently based in Miami Beach, FL where he is a first-year Viola Fellow at the New World Symphony. Recent highlights include appearing at Spoleto Festival USA to perform such works as the world premiere of the opera Omar by Rhiannon Giddens and Michael Abels as well as Anna Thorvaldsdottir’s AIŌN Symphony.
An avid chamber and orchestral musician, Toby has performed extensively throughout North America and Europe in other festivals such as the Taipei Music Festival and Academy, New York String Orchestra Seminar, Ottawa Chamberfest, and NYO Canada. Aside his classical music endeavors, Toby has also collaborated with many of his colleagues in the jazz scene to perform and record various audio and video projects.
Toby received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Samuel Rhodes and is a recipient of the Ruth Chatfield String Instrument Scholarship. Toby also gives great credit in his musical growth to other past music educators including Dan Avsholomov, Eric Nowlin, Andréa Tyniec, and Margaret Hill.
Outside of music, Toby also enjoys travelling, watching/playing basketball, and working as a professional photographer and filmmaker working with many great colleagues in addition to personal projects.
